Block ("we", "our", or "us") is a parental control app that helps children improve their reading skills while managing screen time. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you use our service.

Information We Collect

From Parents

  • Account information (email, name via Clerk authentication)
  • Payment information (processed by Lemon Squeezy, not stored by us)
  • Child profile information (name, age, reading level)

From Children's Devices

  • Device identifier (Android ID)
  • Device model and manufacturer
  • Audio recordings (for speech-to-text transcription only)
  • Reading attempt data (sentences read, accuracy scores)
  • App usage monitoring (which blocked apps are accessed)
  • Screen time duration

How We Use Information

  • To provide reading practice and track progress
  • To calculate and adjust reading scores
  • To enforce screen time limits set by parents
  • To sync settings between parent dashboard and child device
  • To improve our speech recognition and sentence generation

Audio Recording

When children read sentences aloud, audio is temporarily recorded and sent to Deepgram, a third-party speech-to-text service, for transcription. We do not store audio recordings on our servers. Deepgram processes audio in accordance with their privacy policy at deepgram.com/privacy.

Audio is:

  • Only recorded during active reading sessions
  • Transmitted securely via HTTPS
  • Not stored permanently by Block
  • Used solely for transcription purposes

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • Deepgram - Speech-to-text transcription
  • Google Gemini - Sentence generation (no personal data shared)
  • Clerk - Parent authentication
  • Lemon Squeezy - Payment processing
  • Convex - Database hosting

Data Retention

  • Reading attempts and scores: Retained while account is active
  • Audio recordings: Not retained (processed in real-time)
  • Device information: Retained while device is linked
  • Account data: Deleted within 30 days of account deletion request

Children's Privacy (COPPA)

Block is designed to be used by children under parental supervision. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA):

  • Parent accounts are required to set up child profiles
  • Parents control what data is collected about their children
  • Parents can request deletion of their child's data at any time
  • We do not serve behavioral advertising to children
  • We collect only information necessary for the service to function

Data Security

We implement appropriate security measures to protect your information:

  • All data transmitted via HTTPS encryption
  • PIN protection on child devices (hashed with SHA-256)
  • Device authentication for API requests
  • Rate limiting to prevent abuse

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access your data
  • Request deletion of your data
  • Unlink devices at any time
  • Delete your account
